The Captain Jinks Show began on WEEK-TV (channel 43, remember?) in the fall of 1956. Stan Lonergan as Captain Jinks did the show alone until 1960, when George Baseleon put on the fake mustache and stocking cap and became Salty Sam. Cookie was also on the show. You never saw anything of him except his arm but he gave the Captain a lot of grief. The show enjoyed a good audience almost from its inception, but once Stan and George began bouncing their humor off one another, the show's popularity skyrocketed. In the early 60's the tv station arranged to have the captain and Salty participate in the annual Santa parade held each year. They soon had their own float and became a very important part of this event. Each year Captain Jinks and Salty Sam would visit the childrens wards at local hospitals and give out gifts to the kids. Thanks, Stan and George, for not only entertaining, but more importantly, for being friends to thousands of youngsters throughout central Illinois!

George Baseleon died in 1985, Stan Lonergan in 1989.

Many thanks to Mr. Bill Adams, who provided information and photos. Bill was promotion manager for WEEK-TV during the "Jinks" years. He now writes the "Yester Days" column for the Journal Star.

Remember the Acri Creature feature and Nightmare Theater? Check out this great website for more on these old shows and the Captain & Salty!
